What does Jesus do when the crowds are pressing in, the miracles are multiplying, and everyone is looking for Him? He slips away — alone — to pray in the dark.
Join us as we continue our journey through the Gospel of Mark, examining one of the most revealing passages in the entire account: Mark 1:35-45 — a text that shows us both the priority of Jesus and the power of Jesus in a single, breathtaking chapter.
Two Scenes. One Savior. An Unmistakable Mission.
Scene One: The Desolate Place (Mark 1:35-39)
Before the sun rises, while the disciples are still sleeping and the crowds are already gathering, Jesus is gone. He has withdrawn to a desolate place — not to hide, but to pray. When Simon and the others finally track Him down with the urgent report, "Everyone is looking for you," Jesus' response is stunning in its clarity:
"Let us go on to the next towns, that I may preach there also, for that is why I came out."
Jesus was not driven by the crowd's agenda. He was driven by the Father's. This passage forces every believer to ask: What drives my schedule — the crowd's expectations, or the Father's call?
Scene Two: The Untouchable Man (Mark 1:40-45)
A leper approaches. In the ancient world, leprosy was not merely a disease — it was a sentence of total exclusion. Lepers were untouchable, unclean, and unwelcome in every community. Yet this man kneels before Jesus and speaks one of the most theologically loaded sentences in the Gospels:
"If you will, you can make me clean."
He had no doubt about Jesus' power. His only question was about Jesus' willingness. And Mark records something extraordinary: Jesus, moved with pity, stretched out His hand and touched him. Not from a distance. Not with a word alone. He touched the untouchable — and the leprosy vanished immediately.
The Messianic Secret and the Unstoppable Word:
Jesus charges the healed man to say nothing — but the man cannot contain it. He goes out and proclaims it freely, so that Jesus can no longer enter a town openly. The very attempt to silence the miracle only amplifies it.
What the Rest of Scripture Reveals:
• Hebrews 10:24-30 — The community that gathers around Jesus is called to stir one another to love and good works, not to neglect meeting together as the Day draws near. Jesus' mission creates a community of urgency.
• Acts 2:14-21 & Acts 2:1-47 — Peter's Pentecost sermon reveals that the Spirit poured out on all flesh is the continuation of Jesus' mission — sons and daughters prophesying, the name of the Lord proclaimed to all who will call upon it.
• John 17:1-26 — In His High Priestly Prayer, Jesus reveals the heart behind every healing, every early morning prayer, and every move to the next town: "that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent."
The mission was never about the miracles. The miracles were always about the mission.
