The Spoken Gifts of the Spirit

On the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit fell — and the first thing that happened was that people began to speak. From the very beginning, the Spirit of God has been a speaking Spirit, and He gifts His people with spoken gifts to build up, encourage, and unify the body of Christ.

Join us for this special Pentecost message in our series, "The Power of the Spoken Word," as we explore the spoken gifts of the Holy Spirit and how they are meant to function in the life of the church today.

Key Themes:

• The Priority of Prophecy (1 Corinthians 14:1-5, ESV): Paul urges us to earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially prophecy. While tongues edify the individual, prophecy builds up, encourages, and comforts the entire church. We explore why Paul places such a high value on spoken gifts that are intelligible and community-building.

• Speaking According to Your Measure of Faith (Romans 12:3-8, ESV): God has assigned to each believer a measure of faith and a specific gift. Whether it is prophecy, teaching, exhortation, or giving — each gift is to be exercised with humility and in proportion to the faith God has given. We are called to speak our gifts, not bury them.

• Equipping the Saints Through Spoken Ministry (Ephesians 4:1-16, ESV): Christ gave apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers to the church for one purpose: to equip the saints for the work of ministry. These spoken offices are not for personal glory — they are for building up the body of Christ until we all reach maturity in Him.

• Do Not Quench the Spirit (1 Thessalonians 5:12-28, ESV): Paul closes his letter with a series of rapid-fire commands that reveal the atmosphere of a Spirit-filled community. We are to respect those who speak over us in the Lord, to not despise prophecy, and to test everything — holding fast to what is good. The spoken gifts of the Spirit are not to be silenced, but they are to be tested.

On this Pentecost Sunday, we celebrate the gift of the Spirit who empowers ordinary people to speak extraordinary words of life, truth, and encouragement into the world around them.
